Itzamarie Chevere-Torres

Associate Director of Postdoctoral Affairs

Dr. Itzamarie Chevere-Torres is a natural collaborator, communicator, and strategic problem solver who coordinates and facilitate career development opportunities for all postdocs across Rutgers. Itzamarie is committed to serving as a central contact between faculty, postdocs, and administration and to promoting resources that are available to postdocs here at Rutgers.

She obtained her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Puerto Rico in 2007. Following her initial passion for science and thrill for discovering how the brain works, Itzamarie conducted neuroscience research at New York University and most recently at Rutgers University as a postdoctoral associate. As a former Rutgers postdoc, she understands the importance of finding resources to identify the right career path and to prepare for a successful career transition.

While a member and co-President of Rutgers Postdoctoral Association, Itzamarie collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of postdocs and university stakeholders to develop and coordinate workshops for postdocs interested in exploring career paths in and outside academia. She also helped organize and participated in outreach events, social events for the postdoctoral community, and the Annual Postdoc Symposium.

She is both a Rutgers iJOBS and OASIS Leadership and Professional Development program alumna, and as a founding writer of Rutgers iJOBS blog, she contributed to the planning, writing, and editing of non-traditional science careers and professional development articles.

Through her participation in the Cheeky Scientist Association, she has gained access to a network of thousands of professional scientists working outside academia. She is trained to identify transferable skills and have knowledge of over 20 different science careers outside of academia.  As a member of the National Postdoctoral Association, she has access to a national network of postdoctoral affairs directors and administrators who provide their support, monthly webinars, and resources to develop career development opportunities for postdocs.
